Northwestern UniversityDepartment of Physics and Astronomy Qualifying ExaminationsThis page is a study guide for graduate students taking the Department of
Physics & Astronomy's Qualifying Examinations. The examinations consist of
three written parts: Classical & Statistical Physics, Electromagnetism, and
Quantum Mechanics. The following are PDF files of the individual examinations
given since Spring 2006. Please note that examinations before 2002 are taken from
an older qualifying format in which there were four written parts and one oral
part. The current format has three written parts only, as outlined above. The
level and type of problems are the same for both formats.
